March 13, 2025 — Self Care Decisions (SCD), the team behind the symptom checker tools used by healthcare organizations across the country, just wrapped up a major milestone: a successful Type 2 SOC 2 audit. The review, done by the independent firm AssurancePoint, reviewed and tested our systems from October 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025 — and the result? A clean bill of ‘security’ health.

If you're not familiar, SOC 2 is a widely respected framework from the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). It looks at how well a company protects data and keeps systems secure, available, and trustworthy. Passing with a “clean” or unqualified opinion means we met the highest standards when it comes to security controls.

“Our customers trust us with sensitive health-related information, and that trust means everything. This clean SOC 2 report shows we take that responsibility seriously and continue to invest in strong security practices.”
— Joseph Gledhill, SCD’s CTO and Information Security Officer.

Security isn’t a one-time checkbox for us. We plan to go through this process every year, constantly reviewing and improving how we protect the data that flows through our Symptom Checker Applications.

A little about us

Founded in 2002, Self Care Decisions partners with healthcare organizations: health systems, insurance plans, and physician networks, to provide reliable symptom checker content. You’ll find our tools embedded in websites, mobile apps, and personal health records used by patients every day.

Our content is authored by Dr. Barton Schmitt, whose nurse triage guidelines are trusted by call centers across North America. These tools help users determine how serious their symptoms are, what steps to take next, and how to manage their care from home when appropriate.

The tech behind it all — our Symptom Checker Application — is built to make this guidance accessible, fast, and easy to use across platforms.
